Feminization Laryngoplasty - Surgery to raise the pitch and register of the voice.
James Thomas, Portland, Oregon
Feminization Laryngoplasty (FemLar) is a type of vocal cord (laryngeal) surgery designed to obtain a more feminine sounding voice in the male to female transgender patient. Several types of procedures target the frequency or pitch of the resting speaking voice to some degree. Feminization Laryngoplasty changes the pitch as well as some of the resonance characteristics of the speaking voice by changing the configuration of the vocal tract and not just the vocal cords themselves. Vocal cord tuning performed with a KTP Laser will be discussed. Video and audio recordings of normal vocal cords, as well as recordings of patient voices undergoing the various procedures, should offer the audience a better understanding of the voice as well as a better comparison of the results of these procedures than numbers alone do. Feminization Laryngoplasty will also be compared with CricoThryoid Approximation (CTA), which is designed to place the voice into a permanent falsetto.

Christine Jorgensen: The Accidental Transsexual Icon.
Dr. Richard Docter
In 1950 it was generally considered unethical for physicians to assist transsexuals; Christine was exceptionally fortunate, therefore, to become a research patient of Dr. Christian Hamburger in Copenhagen. Thirty-two months later she would return to New York City to be greeted as the world's first transsexual. While she clearly was not the first, she was the first to achieve world fame. News reporters asked how her story had become public, and she attributed her “outing” to a dishonest laboratory technician. Actually, she had inadvertently outed herself. When the world learned of Christine's “sex change,” she was immediately transformed from a virtual pauper to a remarkable well-to-do 26 year old woman. About a year later, she was commanding fees of $5000 a week for her nightclub appearances. Without intending to do so, she had become both rich and famous, but her fame did not encompass the recognition she believed she deserved. A victim of cancer, she died just before her 63rd birthday.
